A Brief Exploration Into The Weird World And Disturbing Obsessions Of Scrupulosity

Religious OCD, usually referred to as 'scrupulosity', is characterized by immoral and repetitious thoughts about religious symbols such as God, prophets, saints and angels. The obsessive thoughts may be uniquely connected with individual's religious beliefs and the culture that he or she is living in. Some of the well-known thoughts accompanying scrupulosity are uncontrollable desires to swear to God or having sexual fantasies with God or other religious beings. Even though they are aware that these thoughts are not true, these people have difficulties dealing with them.

The symptoms of religious OCD can begin at age 10-15 and usually affects their lifestyle and relationships with others. These people tend to think or imagine things that are unacceptable or against God, and feel that they might commit in a sin just by having those thoughts. Scrupulosity is noted more in religious people, however being religious is not the reason that sets off this disorder. People can have these unwanted and intrusive thoughts when they are praying or engaging in their usual activities. Listed below are some examples of the typical thoughts accompanying scrupulosity:

- Visualizing that he or she is also having sex with God or other holy beings when having sex with his/her lover

- Swearing to God, prophets, saints, etc.

- Thinking unacceptable things about holy places such as church, mosques, temples, etc.

- Picturing they are peeing on a holy book

Due to these morbid thoughts, affected individuals usually withdraw them selves from society. They are convinced that if others find out about his/her improper thoughts, they are going to be blamed or condemned. As their friends and family do not know what scrupulosity is, they usually ridicule them. As a result of all these negative feedbacks, these people usually try to lessen their guilt with cleaning, washing and bathing compulsively. They also tend to think they deserve eternal damnation as a punishment for having these thoughts.

Even though managing scrupulosity is difficult, it can be healed with psychotherapy, drugs and self-help. Today most people still have no idea about what scrupulosity is and what it is like to live with religious OCD.

Having scrupulosity causes many problems in an individual's life. The very first thing that these people need to know is that scrupulosity is a manageable and treatable disorder. The obsessive thoughts are not their fault, and they will not be punished by God. They need to know that being a sinner and suffering from religious OCD are very different things. The good thing is, some of these individuals realize that these thoughts are not genuine but just cannot manage their guilt towards God. With psychotherapy sessions, they can gain insight and develop alternative thoughts to get over scrupulosity.
