Baby Boomers - Facing Retirement And Aging In Addition To Plenty Of Issues

The baby boomers are the "golden generation" born in the wealth and relative peace following World War II. While most consider the boomers as the kids of one continuous era, others divide them into 2 parts, with those born between 1946-53 being the real baby boomers and those born from 1954-64 sometimes known as the "Jones Generation" as a subset of boomers. This is with reference to Landon Jones who authored Great Expectations: America and the Baby Boom Generation and is believed to have introduced the term "baby boomer."

The baby boomers grew up in a fast developing world. Events in their childhood and young adulthood included events such as the terror of the Russian missile disaster, the assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the triumph of Moon landing, the victories and tragedies of the human rights activity, and the controversies of the Vietnam War era. For them, technologies which were science fiction for their parents became real.

Even the music of the baby boomers was significantly different. Rock & Roll became predominant and with it came big changes in style of dress up and haircuts. Some boomers have forgotten their parents' panic about the shaggy "mop top" Beatles. A few of their other music was the music of social protest.

The baby boomers have been a politically active generation. On the right, boomers rallied around groups like the Young Americans for Freedom, while those on the left formed groups like the SDS and the Yippies. The widespread appearance of television aided to inform their politics and to strengthen their positions with almost instant feedback of news events.

As many of their parents were able to attend college on the GI Bill, the concept of a higher education wasn't rare but more expected. Government funding & grants, loans and scholarships for college were widely available and the boomers took fantastic benefit of these opportunities. Because of that, many baby boomers entered the professions and were able to gain considerable monetary success.

At present, a new expression has emerged for this fascinating generation. As the baby boomers reach their 50's & 60's they are being referred to as the "Golden Boomers." Only time will say how this lively generation adapts to the challenges of aging and changed life styles.
