The Waterloo Region in southern Ontario is one of the fastest growing and most economically vibrant areas in Canada. Kitchener is the largest community in the region and where the Regional Municipal government is headquartered. In 2006 the the number of people in Kitchener was 204,6682. The City of Waterloo situated right beside Kitchener has a population of just under 100,000. Waterloo also has in excess of 20,000 non-resident college and university students attending its universities and regional colleges. The two cities actually abut each other and together are almost always called Kitchener-Waterloo or K-W.
The city of Cambridge is located in the south eastern part of Waterloo Region and has a population of right around 120,000. Cambridge was formed in 1973 with the merging of the towns of Galt, Preston, Hespeler and Blair. Many local people felt the merger was a "shotgun marriage" foisted upon them by the Province of Ontario.
Today The Region of Waterloo is right up there with the most dynamic and fastest growing areas in Canada because it has some of the best farm land in North America, two well respected Universities, a strong financial and insurance sector, numerous manufacturing plants and a burgeoning high tech sector centered around Research in Motion and numerous spinoff businesses from the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University.
Families thinking about moving into the Waterloo Region will find excellent job opportunities, an exciting and varied cultural life, and unmatched educational facilities. K-W real estate is also quite a bit cheaper than similar properties in other nearby cities such as Toronto.
The fact is, residents and businesses in Waterloo Region have an enviable combination. They have the more friendly and pleasant atmosphere found in a smaller urban centre along with the considerable amenities of major urban centres such as Toronto, Mississauga, London and Detroit.
